SCD stands for the "Specific Carbohydrate Diet", it is Gluten-Free, Grain-Free, Rice-Free, Soy-Free, Sugar [cane]-Free, Potato-Free, Corn-Free, and Artificial {anything}-Free.
The foods that are allowed on the SCD have been determined from scientific research based on the chemical structure of these
foods. Allowed
carbohydrates have a single molecule structure (monosaccharides) so they are easily absorbed by the intestine wall (ie Honey). Complex
carbohydrates (ie cane sugar, starches) are not allowed because they feed harmful bacteria in the intestines causing them
to overgrow producing nasty by products.
The diet works by starving out these bacteria and restoring the balance
of healthy bacteria in our gut. For a more comprehensive explanation I suggest visiting the website Breaking the Vicious Cycle or even better reading the book. From what I can tell, it is is also compatible with the "Paleo" diet as the foods consumed are mainly all foods that were available before the advent of major agricultural production. I have read many testimonials where it has proven to be highly successful for
people who suffer from various bowel disorders as well as many related
problems which stem from imbalances in the intestinal tract and so far it has been working for us. There is a specific schedule for introducing various foods so I encourage anyone who is interested in trying it out to read the book or check out the website.
